What's the purpose of having a tachometer in automatic transmission cars?

I don’t understand why they have tachometers in auto tranny cars. Wouldn’t this space be better used for a cluster of gas mileage gauge, temperature, alternator, temperature, etc…?
Tachometers were originally developed for letting the driver know when to shift (manual transmission cars)

A tachometer doesnt even need to be in a manual…My brothers car doesnt have one. The only problem is you cant see redline but most expericanced drivers know where it is by the sound of the engine. Tachometers are in automatics for the same reason there in manuals to know what the RPM is, just because the trans. shifts automaticly doesnt mean you dont need to know where your redline is or what your car is idleing at.

Very good point. There isn’t much reason for a tachometer in an automatic, other then the driver is used to having one. The more important reason is it keeps the auto manufacturer from having to develop a different gauge cluster in their auto and manual transmission vehicles.

A tach isn’t really necessary even with a manual transmission. I always knew when to shift by the sound of the engine. But, I guess it can’t hurt to have the information.

I agree that the space could be used for the following gages: Oil pressure, oil temperature, trans oil temperature, water temperature, volt meter and a greatly improved fuel level gage. As you can see I’m already far out of space.
In my opinion tachometers are a useful tool to gage rpm’s in overdrive and third gear lockout in comparison to other cars and trucks. This is a valuable tool to determine transmission gearing and final drive ratios if you were ever tempted to do such a thing.
In the sixties and early seventies tachometers were useful to determine shift points (standard or automatic) when on the dragstrip. Particularly when saddled with a valve floating hydraulic lifter motor.
