I want to get my husband a digital camera. We have one but it’s so big and bulky and he has been asking for a smaller one. He will mainly be using it like to take pictures of cars he works on, stuff like that. So, i dont want nothing too expensive that he can drop or lose it. Maybe just something good enough to take some nice shots. What pixels should i be looking for and what is a good brand? Thank you!

Any 8 megapixels cameras from Canon, Nikon, Sony are good for general purpose use. You can take a look at Canon A570 IS, A720 IS, SD850 IS or SD870 IS.

Kodak makes a 5 megipixal that is really nice, but there 6 megapixal sucks and they’re both about the same price. Under $100 dollars.

Check out the nikon coolpic camers, there are about 20 different ones ranging in price from about $150 to $500. And that right from their web site, so you may find them cheaper somewhere else. Nikon has also been making great cameras for pro and home use for a long time and not a new company that makes crap.
Unless your going to blow the pictures up bigger than 8×10 or use them for print (like magazines) a 4 or 5 mega pixel camera is fine. Now 6 or 7 megapixels camers are very common, but I think brand matters more file size. Pentax also makes good cameras
The more mega pixels your pictures are, the bigger the file so you can’t fit as many on your memory card.
Also you may want to buy a camera that use the same memory cards as the camers you already have, and not all brands use the same memory.

I agree with AMT’s response since Consumer Reports states that the minimal megapixel requirement for a digital camera should be 5 megapixels. And Kodak makes terrific affordable consumer digital cameras.
Good luck!
